De Niro was born in New York City on August 14, 1943, and will turn 80 years old in 2024. He was the son of the artist Virginia Admiral (mother) and Robert De Niro Sr. (father). 

De Niro was raised in Greenwich Village by his mother after his parents divorced when he was just three years old. De Niro’s mother, who worked as a typesetter and printer to support her son, raised him mostly while his father continued to be wholly committed to his art. Here are some facts  from the life of De Niro that you probably did not know.

  • He Participated In Free Acting Classes

When De Niro was younger, he loved going to the movies and spent a lot of time with his father. His mother worked as a copyeditor and typist for a Dramatic Workshop part-time at the time. At this point, fortune gave him a hug and gave him permission to enrol in free kid acting training. 

  • He Had A Restaurant, Too

In addition to his passion for acting, De Niro co-owns the Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco, which he founded alongside the late Robin Williams and Francis Ford Coppola. A large portion of his father’s artwork is on the company’s walls. In addition, he co-owns Nobu and Layla, two restaurants in New York, and owns a restaurant in West Hollywood, California.

  • He Made His First Debut At The Age Of 10 

De Niro completed his sixth grade education at Manhattan’s PS 41, a public elementary school. At the age of ten, he made his school stage debut as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, having started acting courses at the Dramatic Workshop.

  • He Is One Quarter Italian

De Niro was born in New York City. He is credited with being an Italian-American actor, although in reality, he is 1/4 Italian. His father was of Irish and Italian ancestry. His mother was descended from German, Dutch, English, and Irish people.

  • Robert Has Never Completed College 

De Niro was a student at Elizabeth Irwin High School.  He was later admitted to the High School of Music and Art in the ninth grade. He went to Mc Burney School for high school after that, then Rhodes Preparatory School. He dropped out of his private high school to pursue a career in acting. He was never really graduated. Despite this, he enrolled in Stella Adler’s acting programme.

  • He Studied Acting At HB Studio  


De Niro attended Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio in addition to HB Studio. He even had a few bit parts in films, including Les Jeunes Loups, Encounter, and Three Rooms in Manhattan. He went on to play a significant part in Greetings (1968). It was a sacrifice film about men dodging the draft for the Vietnam War. This film was co-directed by De Niro and De Palma even before they were well-known.

  • He Put On Seventy Pounds For The Role

Due to his weight gain of more than sixty pounds for his role in Raging Bull (1980), De Niro previously held the record for Most Weight Gained for a Movie. His rapid weight increase revealed numerous health issues. 


  • His Birthday Falls On The Same Day As Sean Penn’s

Interestingly, Sean Penn and Robert De Niro, two legendary figures in Hollywood, have the same birthday—August 17th! These legendary actors have collaborated on three films together, “We’re No Angels,” “What Just Happened,” and the Vietnam War documentary “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam,” despite their 17-year age difference.  

  • He Ground His Teeth For A Role

In order to give the impression of being a criminal while portraying one, De Niro paid a dentist $5,000 to grind down his teeth. He played the part of Max Candy in the Cape Fear movie.  He desired to adopt the physical appearance of a deranged former criminal. He was prepared to go to any lengths for this! De Niro even paid the same dentist $20,000 to fix the damage after the shoot.

  • He Owns Properties In Manhattan’s East And West

Robert De Niro has a successful acting career in addition to wise real estate investments. He owns houses in Manhattan’s east and west neighbourhoods, with his primary home sitting on over 98 acres in Gardiner, New York. Notably, his previous residences in Manhattan’s West Village and Central Park West also took the attention of lot of people. The former was put up for sale in 2015 with an asking price of $39.5 million.

  •     He Has Won The Oscar Twice

Out of his eight nominations for Academy Awards, Robert De Niro has won two. He was awarded an Oscar for his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in the 1980 film Raging Bull. Aside from that, he was honoured with the Oscar for best supporting actor, which he received for playing Vito Corleone in the beloved film The Godfather Part II. For portraying the identical fictional Vito Corleone role, De Niro also gain another Oscar with Marlon Brando.
