The young man played baseball for a semipro team in the nearby Hastings area while attending Hardy High School.

In 1915, the Pittsburgh Pirates were where he started his career. Dazzy Vance, known for his scorching fastball, was the top strikeout thrower of the 1920s. From 1922 to 1928, he dominated the National League most innings seven times in a row, frequently by a significant margin. He struck out more batters in 1924 than the second-and third-place pitchers put together. In 1930, his final season as a league leader, he led the league in ERA and strikeouts. Vance, who was 41 years old, won 12 matches in 1932.

After the 1935 season, Dazzy Vance left the game. He set a National League history as the league’s leader in strikeouts for seven straight years, won twice, and was the league’s leader in ERA 3 times (1922–1928). Given that he played only 33 innings in the big leagues while he was in his 20s, Vance left with a 197-140 victory, 2,045 strikes, and a 3.24 ERA. Dazzy Vance was elected to the Baseball National Hall of Fame at Cooperstown in 1955, earning baseball’s highest accolade.

Legacy

In 1955, Vance was admitted into the Hall of Fame of Baseball. When a local highway patrolman called his attention to him and informed him that a cameraman was at his residence, he found out about his election. Brooklyn hosted a Day party for Dazzy Vance. John Skipper, his biographer, described his Baseball Hall of Fame acceptance as “subdued” in comparison to the party in Brooklyn.

Cause Of Death 

Just two weeks shy of turning 70, Dazzy Vance passed away from a heart attack on February 16, 1961, at Homosassa Springs. His passing came as a shock. He was an avid outdoorsman who stayed physically active and appeared to be in good shape till the very end. He had been in fair condition up until a month before his passing, despite complaining of occasional fatigue, and had even participated in an old-timer’s sporting event in St. Petersburg.
